| January, 2001, Beaverton, Oregon introduces the UV-Pen, a new UVA light source. This portable, powerful, high-tech tool has many uses and advantages over traditional UV sources and comes in two models: narrow and wide UV beam. It costs US$129 and comes with a one year warranty. The UV-Pen is made in the U.S.A. | ![]() |
The pen-sized UV-Pen uses a small UV LED for the light source instead of the more common tube. The high intensity UV LED is very sturdy and its maximum UV output is immediate with no warm up time necessary. The UV-Pen's high-tech circuitry (three intensity settings, seven timers, beeper, regulated DC-DC converter, etc.) coupled with the LED¡¯s high efficiency results in a unit that can be run for more than 20 hours on a pair of standard AAA 1.5V alkaline batteries.
The UV-Pen is simple to use with only one button to control all functions and an indicator light to show which functions are chosen. It is designed with micro-controller technology that allows many functions not available in most UV lamps. Light intensity can be set to three different levels: 100%, 50% and 25%. The unit also includes seven optional timer settings so you can set the UV-Pen to automatically beep and turn off at intervals from one minute to one hour. The UV-Pen also includes a manual off function with no limit on the on-time.
Although the lamp is small, it emits a strong, concentrated beam of UV light in the 370nm range of the ultra-violet spectrum. It is perfect for near-field work. There are two models available, one with narrow dispersion and one with wider dispersion, see figures below.
