AUTOMATED THREAD INSPECTION FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM

TSC are delighted to announce the launch of a unique thread inspection system for drillstrings, known as ATI (Automated Thread Inspection). Many downhole failures of drillstring threads have been attributed to the poor reliability of conventional inspection methods to detect cracking in the threads of drillstring components. ATI addresses these concerns and provides an inspection capability which outperforms existing methods of inspection in terms of both capability and reliability.

Out Goes:

  • Inspectors working under difficult conditions
  • Extensive pre-cleaning
  • Use of oil based cleaning or inspection consumables
  • Reliance on operator to make on the spot decisions
  • Different method for magnetic/non-magnetic components

Old Style Thread Inspection

ATI provides:

  • Light weight hand held probes
  • Reduced cleaning
  • Operation under any lighting conditions
  • Improved environmental conditions
  • PASS/FAIL reporting
  • Automated inspection reports
  • Fully auditable results
  • Reduced drillstring handling requirements
  • Components can be inspected vertically or horizontally

TSC ATI Inspection

ATI provides a replacement for conventional MPI and penetrant testing methods for drillstrings threads. The easy to deploy hand held probes can be used in any lighting or weather conditions. The simple PASS/FAIL reporting removes operator variability and provides auditable results.

Field trials on the ATI system have shown significant benefits in terms of inspection reliability over conventional visual techniques. This means the likelihood of putting cracked components downhole is reduced. The standard system covers NC38, NC50, 51/2" FH, 65/8" REG, 75/8" REG threads. Specials probes are available for a wider range of thread sizes.

The development of ATI has been supported by Shell, BP, British Gas, Statoil and the Offshore Supplies Office.
